Across NHS Scotland, many people are already asking themselves what more they can do to work in a more sustainable way – and that curiosity is a powerful starting point.
Sustainability doesn’t begin with big changes; it grows from small, thoughtful decisions made every day, in every role. Whether it’s reducing waste, rethinking how we use resources, or making more mindful choices, these actions can feel simple on their own. But together, across a workforce of this scale, they add up to something much bigger – supporting a healthier NHS, a healthier population, and a healthier planet for the future.
Here, colleagues across Scotland’s health and care can explore some of the initiatives already underway – and discover learning opportunities and other ideas and approaches being tested across NHS Scotland, helping to spark new thinking and show how sustainability focused change can begin in any setting.

Did you know?

NHS Scotland has had a Furniture Framework in place since late 2023, helping NHS Scotland Boards access a range of businesses that can support the reuse, refurbishment and repurposing of furniture.
By extending the life of existing items, Boards can reduce unnecessary purchasing, cut waste and help prevent furniture from ending up in landfill.
Developed in partnership with organisations including the Scottish Government and Zero Waste Scotland, the framework also supports a number of Scottish supported businesses that provide employment opportunities for people who may face some barriers to work. It’s a practical example of how sustainability can deliver environmental, social and economic benefits.
To find out more, NHS Scotland colleagues can speak to their local procurement teams for more information (referencing the NP785-23 Furniture Framework).
