Clinical Environmental Action Network (CLEAN): Connecting Clinicians for Sustainable Care
The Clinical Environmental Action Network (CLEAN), hosted by Green Healthcare Scotland within the Centre for Sustainable Delivery at NHS Golden Jubilee, brings together clinicians and healthcare professionals who share an interest in reducing the environmental impact of care while improving outcomes for patients. The network aims to deepen knowledge and understanding of climate change, sustainable healthcare and the practical actions that can support greener clinical practice across NHS Scotland.
Meeting quarterly, CLEAN provides a forum for learning, discussion and collaboration. Members hear from leading experts from Scotland and across the UK, exploring emerging evidence, innovative approaches and real-world examples of environmentally sustainable healthcare. Topics span a wide range of clinical specialties and sustainability challenges, helping colleagues understand how environmental considerations can be integrated into everyday care.
Recent discussions have covered areas such as sustainable prescribing, greener approaches to emergency care, the physics of anaesthetic gases, greener practices in medical imaging, and exploring sustainability opportunities within maternity services. These sessions provide practical insights while highlighting the growing body of evidence linking high-quality care with environmental sustainability.
